Consider also...as an aside...

Air war rules do not in many ways
accord with actual experiences in combat.

They can be VERY counter intuitive.

2-1 is Far better than 1-1, more than twice as good in fact

But 10-1 is not necessarily tenfold better (or more) than 1-1

Indeed a fightng pair gainst many can often be a boon...and particularly
so in the days of the mk 1 eyeball style of combat.

The larger force is in a target poor environment but vice versa is not
the case..

the pair can achieve many 'snapshots' in such an environment whilst
the larger force has great dificulty in maintaining a combat environment
in the head as he tries to engage...

i.e.
as the singleton almost anything you see in your sights is a target...if
the enemy is 30 strong, you have a 100% chance that what you see is
somehing you can shoot at. (if you are a pair, you _know_ where your
number 2 is at all times, and vice versa.

In his case as something fleetingly crosses his sights he has a 30-1
chance that it is one of his own side (unless he has everyone mapped out
in his mental picture of what is going on).

So the actual situation can be highly unstable and difficult to
predefine...and the odds are anything but simple to calculate...which is
why may aces seemed to lead such charmed lives...
