Ever since the WIlcox book was published, this chimera comes up regularly.
It's proof of the limitations of the World Wide Web of Lies as a research tool,
The Wikipeidia article is a very good summary of the evidence. Or lack of it.
There were actually two separate US programs, the U-235 one which resulted in the Hiroshima device, and used up the US entire supply of U-235; I'm not sure when another one would have been available....
And the Plutonium implosian device, the Trinity test and Nagsaki, with another available on August 18/19 (Planned).
If there had been a viable Japanese program, we would have heard more about what they learned from it from the Soivets at the end of the cold war.
There is an important new book, .The Nuclear Express (Reed & Stillman, 2009); The authors are a couple of Nuclear Intelligence Specialists, they review the entire history of the worlds Atomic Programs. Including the (abortive) Japanese programs, and one of their more interesting conclusions is that ALL the world's nuclear weapons benefited (derived) from the Los Alamos (Trinity/Fat Man) Implosion device. The first Soviet Device was a monkey copy of Fat Man. (August 29, 1949);
So, no viable Japanese program.
STUDY the evidence (such as it is) folks.
