>As for Cavalry Strength and mobility, part of this is the CRT; On CRT #4 (Summer of 1941) no amount of jiggering the Combat Strengths will allow for useful >Russian Counterattacks.

I have to voice this because of what I have seen with the house supply rules I am testing with the Attack on the March rules. I use a shifting CRT based on supply length, so that as you extend away from your supply base, not only do you drop strength on a sliding scale you also drop CRT and cause a positive CRT shift for the enemy if they attack. The result is that the Russian side can find itself on CRT one attacking ½ strengrth Germans if they thin themselves out enough and extend away aggressively!

So that issue, at least in 1941 to allow Russian counter attacks can be done! Just note that because of the higher loss rates suffered for no AEX for OOS attacks and the attacking done during movement the Russians are allowed 3x more 1-4 when they build. Thus a 1-4 group is 12x1-4 instead of 4x1-4.

All and all the extra strength and radical change to the combat system balance out and allow the Russians enough mass on the ground to burn up a few 3-5/2-5/1-4 to bleed the Germans down.

The system also works the same on the opposite end if the Russians develop a big breakthrough, they extend and get caught in a counterattack that sees the Germans on CRT 1 in 1944.

>Actually, the 1-3 is probably a pretty accurate reflection of the strenth of the later, "light" cavalry divisions. (3,500 men); Remember, they pay INFANTRY >movement costs, and get to move again in the expolitation phase, So they will have slightly superior operational mobility to the Infantry.

I strongly disagree with this statement, the 5-5 mobility is far above the 1-3 because it has the ability to move zone to zone. So we have a more mobile unit of cavalry able to be trapped by ZOC while a less mobile infantry unit can move in the same situation! Cav should be using 1mp zoc to allow them to exit zone to zone like the 5-5 can now! Otherwise it is a design flaw of the original game!

>A 1-5 Cavarly Division might be about right.

With normal ZOC I would agree!

>The other problem, the charachteristic summer of 1941 Cavarly Operation was the Cavalry Raid; But there is no real German Rear Area to raid (And what about >those moving pockets?).

Float the CRT based on supply level and you might find a hole or two!

>FWIW, I would like to try (New Idea) letting Cavalry Force March into/through ZOC; Now the Germans have a reason to be wary of them.

Tried it or a form of it in AOM tests, one nasty side effect of allowing force march zone to zone was the mud rules allowed penetration in a German every other hex defense! This makes that type of defense impossible to try and thus has a huge effect on the game that seems small!

>And, maybe retreat before combat and supply rules? (Always in Supply?) (IE, no Zapping a single KD with a single 6-5;

Give them enough mobility and this is a moot point!

>But again, this is all dependent on chaniging the costs so they (the KD) become as expendable as the Russian 1-4 RD (Whose only purpose in life is to turn into a >fort).

I think they are preferable to the 1-4 because of the lower manpower costs, thus each set of 1-3 saves a manpower point that might make an extra 8-6 replacement later in the game!
