OK,
One reason I tried to ask a non-specific open ended question was to TRY and get some non-biased information. Yes, I can make more copies of my 1980's vintage paste your own up sheets for the SPI game. The Colors will NOT match, if this is really important to you.
All of these suggestions are based on the (original) SPI game; I furnished some cut-and-paste (OK, FIRST you paste them on cardstock, then you cut them out) German 7-10 Motorized divisions etc way back then; How standard are they when people play the DG (Board) game, or in the CWiE? I like having them around as the Germans, but you sure don't ned the sixty DG provided for the Germans. A Dozen is plenty, they let you get 3:1 against the Russians from a two hex fromtage.
Most important, evryone needs to realize that every game is a playtest in some way. Some of us have played the game enough, or talked to enough people, to make a (rough) forecast on how things will turn out, depending on the options selected.
And the Pro-German Bias is REALLY bad in my opinion. OK, they probably need some help in 1940 in France. But not so much that Sealion becomes a viable option we need to spend a lot of energy debating. But almost EVERY discussion of Barbarosa I read about is how can the (Germans) be helped to do better? Well gee folks, yes, the base case is that the Russian Army was a shambles in 1941; But somehow they hung on, and by November 1942 were able to start dealing it out to the Germans. Which DOES NOT HAPPEN in the majority of games I have heard/seen. Even an average performance Barbarosa seems disapointing to the Germans, and then, for some reason, they lose interest. Just when I can have some fun as the Russian Player.
So a LOT of my varaint counters are (were) for the Russians. Other than the 8-8 and 9-8 Guards, what (beyond cosmetics) did the DG (Or CWiE) game add for them? OK, the 9-8 are an important concession. But until I have heard/seen them in play, are they enough? Without them, in my entire (gaming) life, I have overun like five German KG. IMHO, the Guards TC should be 10-8, the Guards Mechanized Corps 13-8; It seems only fair....
But as long as the games die for lack of interest in November 1942 at the latest, it is hard to say. I would like to see a more fully articulated German Personnel system, I think DG just grafted on some half baked suggestions from KC (Sorry guys if any of you are reading this); So any game you play using that system, well, again, YOU ARE PLAYTESTING IT.
Did it affect your play of the game, and how? My (original Intent), rejected out of hand by KC, was to present something "different"; I have not seen my draft proposal recently, but the KC draft I saw was a variant on the Soviet, One PP = 1 SP; No allowance for the "Extra" overheads of Mechanized units. Which sort of missed the purpose of the system.
