Well the RN treatment of the French fleet was as much a result of the
mish-mash of British internal politics as it was purely the result of
military concerns. Partly it has been said by some, that the business
was used by Churchill to nail the doubters in the Cabinet, a domestic
shock tactic, designed to silence critics and appeasers as well as to
conclusively demonstrate that British resolve was hardening for the
titanic struggle ahead, for the benefit of all those nations watching on
the sidelines. An indication that John Bull was under new management,
and would not take anything lying down. If you treated with the enemy,
you were likely top be classified with that enemy, and end up in the
firing line...
It had some of the desired effect...
