Since it was my playtesting of CWIE2 with Steve that triggered, at least
in part, his initial comment, I think I should add my two cents. Unless
you are going enforce the forced Allied forward move into Belgium on the
first turn of the invasion, leading to the pocket caused by the Manstein
plan, there is no way the game will play out like history. Any
intelligent Allied will fall back gradually, using the rivers to slow
the advance by halving the attacker. The game will play out more like
the original Schiefflen plan. It will take quite a while for Paris to
fall, but the best German hope is getting next to Paris before the
fortifications can be done, thus triggering the Italian entry and
opening a second front. Then they can gradually grind down the French
lines, at cost. The victory will take longer and be much more expensive
than in history. But it is true that the interaction of attrition and
the other factors still make a German advance possible.
