Subject: Re: [WarInEur] Suggested map changes for CWiE II
Greetings,
O.K. here are some ideas on what should be considered "official" map changes for CWiE II
These are the top 5 mistakes that I feel should be corrected
#1) The city of Hannover should be a German Wherkreis or placement center. http://www.dasheer.org.uk/wehrkreis_system.htm also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_district. Look at Wherkreis XI and you will see that Hannover is on the list.
I have no idea other than an error why SPI left it off the map. I don't have a problem including it. The only in game effect I really see is an increase in German Personnel Points if it is added. That could be counteracted by reducing the personnel multiple periodically to counteract the increase.
#2) Hex G0316 Marienburg should have the Vistula river hexsides on the Prussian border to the coast. No part of East Prussia is on the west bank of the Vistula river. If you do not believe me, look at a map of the area.
I agree here as well. The maps check out. There are a number of areas where the decision on which hexside a river should trace is different from the decision made when the border was traced. The border between Lithuania and East Prussia is another example. The border follows the river on a map but in the game half the hexes are on the opposite side.
Another problem can also be seen when looking at Latvia. The railroad running east from RIga should be north of the river for its entire length, but again these map symbols don't coincide. The artwork on the WitE 1st ed was more accurate in this respect.
If we shift the river lines we will enhance the Soviet defensive positions at the start of 1941 because the Germans will lose the easy overruns. Of course the only real consequence of this should be to slow the Axis drive on Leningrad down and give the Soviets a better chance to hold Leningrad. Since most players feel it falls to easily this is not necessarially a bad thing.
#3) Hex C2321 is part of France not Switzerland.
Yes the southern shore of the lake is French territory. No real effect in the game. More of a quest for historic accuracy than anything else.
#4) Hex D3705 should be the minor port city of Zadar. This is an Italian posession at the start of the game.
Hum! Zadar is not currently listed as a minor port in the game. It and a number of other minor ports should be added (in my opinion), but that will upset most traditionalists. Currently, we can edit the scenario and add ports. This might be an area best left up to individual players until DG decides to update and revise the game once again. I expect that we will see that happen within the next five years if not before.
#5) The nation of Slovakia is not even on the map. Why not? The Slovak border is C5427, C5327, C5527, C5128, C5027, C4928 and Bratislava. The nation of Slovakia exists even today. The old version of War in the East showed it.
No problem with putting it back on the map, but to what purpose? Back in 1976 I wrote to SPI and asked them the same question because I wanted to use my Slovikian units from War in the East ed 1. They wrote back that I was free to do what I liked, but that the Slovakian situation was abstractly represented in the German Production Multiple. Not sure I agree with them, but that would account for why there are no Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian, Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian Axis divisions either. The Hungarian and Rumanians may be over represented in WiE to make up for their lack not sure. But I think the real reason there is no Slovakia etc is simple economics and game simplisity.
We would need to add the country, units and surrender conditions to the code. The map changes are easy. Might be possible as an Option, but I think this would be better left for a future update when we revise all the political rules.
It would be great if these changes could be made. J.M.
