Folks, you are missing the POINT.
The entire Anglo-Saxon "popular" understanding of the Eastern front has been hopelessly compromised by the early arrival of the German version of events, and continues to dominate even the terms of your discussion.
I took a quick look at the thinning military history section (recently reduced 50%!) at my local Barnes & Noble last night, sixteen German Memoirs. etc. (Do Two Volumes on Michael Witman count as one or two?). Including Panzer Leader by Guderian, one of the trio of early sources that compromised the debate.
Hey, some of them are interesting books; Most of us probably read at least one of them in High School.
Contrast with Six (6) books that might have a Soviet Bias; Two on the actuall attack on June 22, 1941. No Russian Memoirs or operational accounts.
Oh, and two books on the Fall of Belin (Beevor & Hastings). Something I have never achieved in the game.
And the Russians DID have their own deep battle doctine, which by 1944 they WERE execting sucessfully. Not to mention Stalingrad. The current counter mix locks the Russians into a "picture" of the wartime Soviet army circa 1974 (The date of the original publication of War in the East). The GAME was oriented to creating the disasters of 1941 and 1942, with the uncertainty of 1943. OK, players use their 20/20 hindsight not to overextend the Germans. Can't I in some way avoid some of the Russian mistakes?
Well, I know, that would be w whole new game in some ways. But let's try and keep the Panzer pushing under control.
Incidently, NONE of the recent books on the Fall of France were available either.
Nothing from the Erickson/Glantz ouevre. Which means we have another generation learning the same biased lessons.
