After the battle the seized emplacement was found to contain guns
incapable of reaching the beaches...and thus militarily only of very
local significance, and irrelevent to the landings.
But military logic results in one mistake generating another. The
Germans, convinced that the efforts made to capture this unimportant
battery, meant it was vital to the allies, set in train determined
efforts to deny the site to the allies, thus the site changed hands
several times (ultimately pointlessly) over the next couple of weeks,
at great cost to both sides.
