As one of the participents in the game last weekend when this issue came to light, I have to say that there is no confusion at all about the use of artillery:
They fire 2 hexes in support of an attack of at least equal face value, and with another unit adjacent to both the artillery and the target.
We all agreed on that.
The question was what do the numbers 10-1-10 represent. One side was adamant that it meant 10 attack,1 defense, 10 movemnt. The other side had always played it as 10 combat strength, 1 range (skipped hexes) 10 movement.
I'd have thought that a quick check of the rules would have solved this issue, but no! There is no reference that artillery has different attack/defence values. The only place to find the information is in the original War in the East rules. (A scan of which I've sent to John). There is an example counter pictured with the attack strength/defense strength indicated seperately at the front of this ruleset.
Basically the 'Living Rules' ought to be updated to include this information.
PS. We held the game at a wargames convention, and it was surprising how many people came to our table(s) and commented 'War in Europe! I haven't seen this for years. I used to play it all the time when I was at College/University!'
These were usually men aged between 40 and 50. I wonder if we managed to pursuade any of them to have another stab at it?
