Again, it is a form of kludge, but to get the "feel" in a stylised
environment...the concept of massing artillery behind your big
battalions is what the effect is all about. To be strictly accurate you
could use overstacking in exactly the same effect with much the same
practical consequences, but the style and feel this gives is somewhat
more instructive to the new simulationist dirst coming at the problem.

There is also the practicalities of large stacks in the cardboard
environment...not to be sneezed at as an issue...

With computer units and counters the representational strategy would
just as easily be solved by morphing the counters into larger (and
smaller) organisation containers (Corps and Armies). Being
traditionalists and conservatives we tend to elect for emulation of the
package, to appeal to the memories of those that are the likelyest
consumers of the product. It is a 1/2 way house, compromising, where
practical, and easing the complexity, where reasonable. People are
recapturing their youth, and to a large degree that is what this is all
about, but those self same people are not about denying themselves the
new tools, and getting greater enjoyment from easier play, and less
onerous representational strategies.
