I finished my annual Bulge game this weekend.
It was somewhat close, as the Germans opened a good hole, but St. Vith and
Elseborn never fell. Bastonge did, thanks to a really good roll generating a
"retreat" result, and there not being enough steps in the city to absorb the
losses and retreat as step losses. However, the Allies were able to overrun
two supply units, and that was enough to make the game a sure Allied win,
the margin being the only thing in question.
Since it was solo, I just ended at turn 12 :)
The interesting thing is how well, the supply system forces the German
player to be a traffic planner, and a good one. One of the supply units that
was lost was due to a really lucky roll on an overrun (66!) which destroyed
it's guard unit, and left it vulnerable to the next moving unit.
The other was more of a calculated risk, that went bad, but mainly since
there wasn't a way to keep units in supply that needed to be, and guard it
well. It's quite hard to keep roads clear, and move up a decent sized
armored force unless you can operate on a main road, and darn few of them
lead to Liege! The Allies only had air support one turn, but that was a big
one in that it helped to destroy one of the big 3 step SS units, and hit
hard two others.
I always play a Bulge game for the "big win" exiting a large amount of units
off to Antwerp. It's jst more fun that way, even if the success rate is
well, small :)
