<<..	A group of Generals and Military Transport Aviation (VTA) officers have
left for the Smolensk region in order to carry out an
inspection/reconnaissance of an airborne assault landing zone in the
vicinity of Vyaz'ma.
Twelve crews from the VTA regiments at Novgorod and Orenburg are to carry
out an airborne assault landing by airborne forces personnel plus their
equipment near Vyaz'ma on 7th February 2007. This is to mark the 65th
anniversary of the Vyaz'ma Airborne Assault Operation (WW-II Jan/Feb 1942).
On 24th January 2007, at Ryazan', two crews - commanded by Major Oleg
Kalinin and Major Vladimir Karon - from 110 Komsomol'sk Transylvanian
Red-Banner Aviation Regiment will carry out an assault landing of some 1200
personnel of an Airborne-Assault unit (not further specified) at the landing
zone at "Zhitovo".
Apparently, a similar operation took place in 1942 in preparation for the
main
event.
The decision to carry out the Vyaz'ma airborne assault was taken by the
"Soviet" High Command (Stavka) on 15 January 1942. During the course of the
operation from January to February 1942, more than 180 transport aircraft -
PS-84, LI-2 and TB-3 were employed and more than 10,000 personnel and more
than 2000 containers of weapons, ammunition, rations and other equipment
were inserted into the landing zone. Also, more than 130 bomber and
ground-attack
aircraft and more than 100 fighter aircraft were employed in support of the
operation.	..>>
