Howdy Gents,
I completed an article on KPG's Battle of Maiwand, and sent it off to Jon
Compton (F&M), who has already read and accepted it for publication (perhaps
in #145 or 46). That game has got very bad press and it's not the game's
fault. There's a quirk in the rules that permits the British player much
greater ability to destroy the Afghanis than previously thought. But, you'll
have to wait for the article. Bottom line is that the game is a much much
better game than anyone has any idea of. The quirk in the rules was
confirmed in a Q&A sent to the game's designer Dennis Bishop.
So, my next task, following the release of the next issue of Old Soldiers is
to write an article on Sand in the Whirlwind, again, a tactical primer with
perhaps some game play examples used for illustration. To that end I need a
player and a neutral GM (the game is designed to be played blind. Players
only know the location their opponent's stacks, not their composition. So,
a neutral 3rd party is needed to play adequately. Any willing participants
out there?
Beyond that, I've been working with James Cordell who, with a friend of his
in Spain, has been re-designing the boards and counters for the old Marshal
Enterprises game La Bataille de Wagram, Aspern-Essling, and Moscowa. I'm
taking the counter art and setting them up in a grid for mounting with front
and back facings. You might wish to contact Mr. Cordell
(j167cordell at earthlink.net) if you're iinterested in the LaBataille series
for these games. You will need to purchase the counters and the like from
him. I'm only doing the work to make it possible to mount them.
Oh, and if anyone wishes to chime in on counter values for the game
Arab-Israeli Wars with application to the Korean War, please do. Several
players have requested such counters and scenarios, but no one has been
willing to make any significant input as to reasonable counter values, mix,
types, etc. .
Thanks Much & Take Care,
Tom Cundiff
