Hi Mike,
Since I've played Tokyo Express recently I'll try to give these questions a
crack. Others on the list can double-check for the accuracy of these
actions. All responses are based on the Basic Rules of Tokyo Express.
First let me make sure I've got the situation right. If the forces are as
follows
Japanese Forces -- 2 CL's and 1 DD
US Forces -- 1 DD and 2 CA's
Japanese Gunnery Rules require CL's and DD's to attack light ships only, if
that's possible. In your case, since the 1DD is in firing range, all 3
ships attack the DD. Choose Japanese firing order however you prefer
(random or not) -- it doesn't matter since Fire Allocations cannot change
once you've set them in the Combat Round.
Suppose the situation is changed (as you mention)
Japanese Forces -- 2 CL's and 1 DD
US Forces -- 1 DD and 2 CL's
DD's and CL's are both light ships, so any of them are fair game for
targeting so far (unlike the earlier case with the CAs). The next piece of
information we need is range. Assuming all US ships are in firing range of
the Japanese DD and CL's, begin by targeting the closest untargeted US ship.
Only two possibilities should arise:
(a) You only have one US ship that is considered closest to your Japanese
ship.
(b) You have several US ships that are considered closest to you Japanese
ship.
If (a) occurs for each Japanese ship, then all 3 Japanese ships will target
the same ship (Japanese ships MUST target the closest non-sinking ship in
their weight class).
If (b) occurs [remember these are light ships at identical range from the
firing ship] then do the following
(i) if at least two ships are currently untargeted randomly determine which
ship is to be targeted.
(ii) if all ships are currently targeted randomly determine which ship is to
be targeted.
(iii) if only one ship is untargeted, target that ship.
Hope this helps,
Jonathan

Subject: [Consim-l] Question on AH Tokyo Express
Dear Guys,
Dear Guys,
Just learning Avalon Hill's Tokyo Express. IN the Basic Game, in
Japanese Gunnery, if you have 2 CL's and 1 DD attacking 1 DD and 2 CA's of
the US navy, all from the same distance, do the 3 Japanese ships all attack
the Jap DD since they are of the same class? Or does only ship attack 1
ship?
How do you choose which of the 3 Japanese ships attacks first?
If the US CA's were CL's, how do you choose targets?
Not sure if these questions are complete enough, but lets start here Thanks,
Mike
