I don't remember the situation exactly, but it's likely you're correct --
the cavalry was probably the closest enemy unit, so rephrasing an
"advance" order to include "closest enemy unit" would have enabled
Ewell's Division to occupy the objective hex without resorting to
initiative. (OTOH the cavalry might have been able to run away far
enough to make the infantry defensive line to the the north the
closest enemy units.)
