[Consim-l] A&A Miniatures Thoughts

Here's a few thoughts on the Axis & Allies Miniatures question.
1. I haven't bought any of the Land Miniatures. One gamer who did told me this:
"The combat table is a direct derivative of PanzerBlitz." Given that, since
Hasbro owns both Avalon Hill and Wizkids, copyright isn't a problem.
2. The Naval Miniatures are fun for me, mainly because of the eye-candy.
However, I can't construe any semblance to simulation, but I also understand that
is NOT what was intended. I find this strange urge to collect them all, unlike
the land miniatures, they come in a mystery box with 5 minis per box. Mentally I
understand they are nowhere near in quality to any of the lead offerings by
regular miniatures. But by the same token, I also understand they are a "toy" and
toys have that "collectible" value that accrue in 30 years or so that miniatures
need about 100 years to get the same value. I'll hand them down to my grandkids
with a disclaimer to never throw them away.
3. Regarding Axis & Allies D-Day, except for a some new units, it plays like
classic A&A except that the reinforcements are predetermined. They vary mainly by
a die-roll, so if you get lucky you can get all your Reinforcements early.
Strategy hinges on that.
