You're not.

Those games are simple enough that they can be played PB(E)M, or otherwise refereed,
which adds a gigantic amount of play value and in fact makes the game _simpler_ to
play.

Yes, and yet not too unbelievably large in board size. 

But there would be a _lot_ of counters.
