[Consim-l] Lee's Greatest Gamble/AOR replay final ruminations

Using the original LGG victory points worked very well. The final tally
was 39 to 34 in favour of the Union.

Overall, what lost the battle for the Confederates was probably the
decision to send Ewell east on the last day to try and clear the way for
the train. Given his performance, Cemetery Hill would have been cleared of
Union troops before the counterattack that routed Hill's corps, and there
would have been time for the Confederates to open a route for the train
eastwards on the fourth day.

On the other hand, if Ewell had not been holding the Hanover Road, it
might have been easier for the Union to contain Stuart's cavalry raid, and
the self-immolation of Reynold's I Corps certainly helped the victory
conditions. The other aspect that I just saw I didn't mention in the
replay was that Jenkins's cavalry brigade, which Lee had ordered to move
from its position on the York Turnpike over to the west to guard the
train, took its own good time and only arrived after 4 hours, far too late
to save the Confederate army train. (It did arrive in time to protect the
Confederate III Corps train from disruption by the rampaging cavalry but
that didn't provide any victory points and III Corps was out of the battle
anyhow.)

So... I very much like the way it works - it certainly gets the grand
tactical feel across, and my esteemed opponent opined that the rules work
well enough to make them available, which I intend to do some time soon.
Now off to try a bit more Seven Days.
